In addition, the storage capacity is much greater with the DVD technology. Modern movie DVDs contain separate audio content so a consumer can listen to the director or actor’s commentary on specific scenes.

The evolution of the DVD technology has also seen rise to different ways to view the videos. A popular option now is a Portable DVD Player. The Portable DVD Player is quite small and, as the name implies, can be easily carried for travel. The Portable DVD Player has a DVD reader as well as a small screen and speakers for playback of the video. In this manner, a person can simply put a DVD disk into the device and watch a movie rather than needing to be in front of a television. Other popular devices are now sporting the ability to watch a DVD. Gaming consoles and most computers now come standard with support for the DVD technology.

Although the DVD Player is not yet obsolete, competitors are looming on the horizon. Leading the race is the Blu-ray technology. This output has a higher level of video quality, but it still remains a more expensive choice. Another option is the HDDVD Player, but many companies are choosing not to support this technology. While Blu-ray and HDDVD offer users a higher quality of video, it is not sure whether they will be adopted on a widespread scale. The popularity of DVD and other digital formats at cheap prices means that it will be difficult to sell to consumers who are concerned about the overall cost of these new players. Also, the ability to obtain DVD quality content from online sources is a further obstacle for DVD technology.
